The Parliament of Romania will host the 63rd Annual Session of NATO Parliamentary Assembly from 6th to 9th October 2017. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly has provided, since its creation, a significant forum for international parliamentary dialogue regarding the security, political, social and economic agenda. NATO PA’s annual sessions are the highlights of the organization’s activity and are hosted, by rotation, by the member countries and associate countries.
This autumn Session will bring together over 50 national parliamentary delegations representing member countries, associate countries, regional partner countries, Mediterranean associate countries and observer delegations, as well as Romanian and foreign guests. The debates will focus on current concerns regarding international security. Also, the Committee Reports discussed during the spring session, held in Tbilisi, Georgia will be adopted and policy recommendations will be formulated.
During the first day, Friday, 6 October, the president of NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Mr. Paolo Alli, the Head of the Romanian parliamentary delegation, senator Vergil Chițac, and the NATO PA Secretary general, Mr. David Hobbs will brief the press at 11.00 (Room “Spiru Haret”, level P).
Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th, are scheduled debates within the 5 specialized committees: Civil Dimension of Security; Defence and Security; Economics and Security; Political; Science and Technology. Each committee will debate a series of reports regarding security and defence issues; other specific concerns will be discussed together with government representatives from member states, academia, civil society and NATO representatives.
The plenary session on Monday, October 9th, 8.40 a.m., will be addressed by the president of NATO PA, Mr. Paolo Alli, the president of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, the president of the Romanian Senate, Mr. Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Liviu Dragnea and NATO Secretary general, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg. On this occasion, the draft budget for 2018 will be presented and voted, elections for some positions within the body’s leadership will be held and resolutions of the committees will be voted.
The draft program of the session’s activities for media representatives, permanently updated, is available on the NATO PA’s website. The program will include the speakers’ names and time tables for the committees’ meetings.
